Meaning of the Red Dress
It is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. The Red Dress Project was created in 2015 by fellow Manitoban and Métis artist Jaime Black to commemorate missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls.
These are my interpretations of the Red Dresses which were created because a mother, Laurie Odjick, asked me to make them for her to commemorate her daughter Maisy Odjick
Maisy Marie Odjick, 16, was from the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg Nation in Quebec. She disappeared along with Shannon Alexander on Sept. 6, 2008. They were both supposed to be going to a dance that night and planned on spending the night at Alexander’s house in Maniwaki. The next morning their belongings were found at Alexander’s house. The girls were initially listed as runaways -- something her mother, Laurie Odjick, believes had stalled the investigation. In 2009, the Sûreté du Québec took over her case. In 2017, the police received new information about the girls disappearance which led investigators to conduct a search of Kitigan Zibi reserve in Québec.”
