What is the symbolism of the white shells in wampum?
Each bead, is made from the shell of the whelk sea snail and the purple bead is from the shell of the quahog, a North Atlantic saltwater clam. Each colour portrays strong symbolism - white is the symbol of health, peace and prosperity while purple represents hostility, disease, death and sorrow.

Wampum — which comes from a Narragansett (Algonquian language family) word meaning a string of white shell beads — are tubular beads manufactured from Atlantic coast seashells. While a variety of shells may be used, most often the white shells are formed from the whelk shell and the purple from the quahog clam shell.

Belts made of wampum were used to mark agreements between peoples. Wampum belts are of particular significance with regards to treatiesand covenants made between Indigenous peoples and European colonial powers.

Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz. It is part of the hexagonal crystal system. Amethyst is a semiprecious stone with a vitreous or glassy luster. It often comes in shades of violet and purple. The meaning of Amethyst is spiritual healing, calmness, and wisdom.
